The Boatswain Suite

Address: Buvikveien 26, Risør

The house is popularly referred to as "The Yellow House", the Vatican, or "The old seaman's house." The suite is situated upstairs on the house's second story. Suite has visible log walls and slanted, paneled ceilings which make for a very cozy atmosphere. Although this suite lacks a view of the small boat dock in Buvika, it does have a modest view of the ocean. Pleasant garden with ocean view and multiple outdoor sitting areas. Parking and boat docking available. Short, scenic walk along the shoreline and Risør's harbor to the town square, approximately 800 meters.

Newly restored suite (2003) in a protected house from the 1750s. In Risør most houses are worthy of preservation, but only three including this one are actually protected by law. For long periods of time in the twentieth century the building housed retired seamen. Today the building consists of four suites (the Captain Suite and the Mate Suite on the ground floor, and the Boatswain Suite and Sailor Suite upstairs). The Boatswain Suite has a floor area of approximately 45m2, however the slanted ceilings somewhat reduce living space. Small kitchen with all modern conveniences. Bathroom with heated tile floors and shower cabinet. Kitchen, living, and sleeping area all in one room. Comfortable queen-size bed. There is an extra hide-away bed in the living room. TV with twelve channels, CD player, and a maritime book collection. The suite is decorated with a rough, rustic look with trestles and maritime effects such as ropes from the ship's deck. The suite is non-smoking.

The boatswain's historic role:
The boatswain, also called "the boss," was in charge of all work and maintenance to be done on the ship's deck. He was boss over all the sailors. Usually, he was an older, experienced seaman. To become a boatswain one had to have a long history of lower ranked positions as well as having papers as a certified sailor or ship's mechanic. On the rank hierarchy onboard, the boatswain belonged in the non-commisioned officers mess with the carpenter, the pumpman, donkeyman, and the 2. cook. The boatswain knot has its name because rope work was one of the boatswain's tasks onboar
