Address: Kragsgata 24C.

The Convoy Suite is a restored, little house (72m²) in the centre of old Risør; in the same part of town as our other suites in Kragsgata. It lies quiet, high, sunny and secluded from the main street, but with shops and restaurants close by. About 150 m to parking, the square and the inner harbour. N.B. History:
The Convoy Suite displays the contributions of the merchant seamen during WWII. Who was for example the “Shetlandgjeng” or “Shetland bus” (Norwegian Independent Naval Unit)? Here one can find pictures and literature etc. that clarify their history.

In Risør, there is also Konvoibyen, founded 16 December 1968. When the sailors came home from the war, there was no apparatus in place to receive them. They were long forgotten and without any recognition for their great and difficult efforts during the war. There were no medals. Notraship (managers in Britain of all free Norwegian vessels during the war years) rejected requests for war pensions and they often lived under very squalid circumstances, some suffering from “war sailor’s syndrome”. The War Sailors’ Association was founded in 1954. Leif Heimstad (war sailor) began to register sailors from 1964.

In 1968, Erik Bye collected money through the TV program “We go onboard”. The money, together with House Bank assistance, financed construction of 29 dwellings for war sailor veterans in Risør. This, together with reports in newspapers (journalist Kjell Arnljot Wiik) and TV (journalist Per Hansson) finally resulted in reparations for these war veterans. These received also war pensions and medals for gallantry.

We will cooperate with the survivors who live in Konvoibyen and the Marine Museum in Horten to preserve some of their history.
